Jacksonville has a wide variety of shopping, dining and recreational activities. With the New River flowing through town on its way to the Atlantic Ocean and the town’s proximity to neighboring beach communities like Topsail, Surf City and Wrightsville Beach, Jacksonville offer endless recreational possibilities to sportsmen and water lovers. Primarily a military town, Jacksonville enjoys a stable economy and has seen steady and well-managed growth throughout its history. The addition of a new by-pass for Hwy 17 makes commuting in and around the heart of town a breeze.

Authorized as a town in 1842, it was named in honor of President Andrew Jackson. Nestled between the New River and the Atlantic Ocean with easy shipping access, Jacksonville steadily became the economic hub of Onslow County, relying on commercial fishing and the trading of agricultural products such as corn, tobacco, peanuts and pork. In 1940, when the decision was made to construct Camp Lejeune, “the Worlds Most Complete Amphibious Base,” the town’s population quickly doubled as workers poured into the area to work on defense projects as part of the war effort. In 1990, the population jumped again when portions of Camp Lejeune were annexed into the city. Today, Jacksonville is recognized by the National Civic League as an “All America City” for the successful collaboration of its citizens, government, businesses and volunteer groups in the governance of the community.
